Plants and Landscaping for Restoration

earth-dayIt’s a great day on the Green Gab! Marla Esser Cloos opened the show by announcing that I, Tony Pratte will be joining Marla as a full time co-host. I am so excited to join my partner in intellectual green as we embark on our own personal green odyssey. I hope you can join us on our journey as we explore more in depth green building, green living and profile green companies.

It’s a crowded studio as Christy Cunningham and Colleen Autry of DJM Ecological Services join us today. April is here! As everyone’s focus starts to shift to Spring; our conversation today focuses on outdoor living. Spending quality time outside, enjoying the weather and nature is an important component of living a healthy life. More and more people are taking advantage of turning their backyards into an extension of their homes.

green-gab-play-ghc-300x300Christy and Colleen open up a window into their world and share their experiences working on wonderful projects like Forest Park. From controlled burns for maintenance to new native plants to restore areas of the park, they detail some of the services that DJM Ecological provides. A big part of DJM’s portfolio is restoration. As true stewards of the environment, we should strive to restore our own little bit of the outdoors back to its original state. Using native plants and avoiding invasive species is the best course of action. We always need to be cognizant of the long term view when making our landscape choices.

An interesting trend Marla touches on is self-sufficiency. More and more people are turning to growing their own vegetables and fruit and raising their own chickens, including Colleen! By doing this, people can tap into a more organic food source, and have fun all while living a greener life.
