Life happens in your home

Your home is your refuge, and it is also the place where life happens. Our homes have a secret life with all the complexity of modern life. We could unknowingly be living in, building, or remodeling a home that is not in our best interest. It may be something big, like old lead paint or mold, new paint, and cabinets that off-gas, or the small stuff, like the leaky toilet, drafty window, or the products you use to clean and sanitize.

Having a greener home does not have to be hard or require sacrifice. A green home is not all or nothing. It starts with making smart choices about products and materials as you live in, build, or remodel your home. Just making a different choice – an appliance, plumbing, a lighting fixture, or even paint – can set you on the course to a home that works better for you and yours.

With the help of my book, Living Green Effortlessly- Simple Choices for a Better Home, I will cover the basics of the systems and features of your home and explain how to make the best of them.

My primary goal in writing this book is to help you improve your comfort, health, and safety in your own home.

Choices

The choices we make regarding location, design, materials, and heating and cooling methods have a direct impact on the health of ourselves, our family, and the community we belong to.

We are all part of the natural system

We cannot forget that we are all interconnected within the natural system that gives life to our planet, even with all the advancements of modern technology. It is crucial that we examine the systems within our homes to ensure that they are meeting both our own needs and those of the earth.

Going Green

Living a greener lifestyle goes beyond energy conservation. It involves leading a healthier life and being accountable for all our deeds.

Common Sense

Common sense tells us that having a green home means creating a space that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional. We all desire to live comfortably and safely, with clean air to breathe and reduced exposure to pollutants and toxins. Achieving this involves making thoughtful material choices and implementing improved airflow systems. Additionally, providing a well-insulated and sealed shell, along with effective heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, ensures that we feel comfortable in our homes year-round.

Save time

By using high-performing materials, fixtures, and finishes, you can save time and effort by reducing the need for frequent maintenance and replacements while also increasing their durability.

Save Money

By investing in energy-efficient and low-maintenance solutions, significant savings can be achieved in both energy and maintenance costs.

A higher selling price for a green home

As you gain more knowledge about green homes, you will realize their value, and be able to point out all their features to potential buyers. Additionally, certified green homes typically command a higher selling price.

Our homes are a system of systems

A home consists of multiple systems that are interconnected. Knowing how these systems operate collectively, their interdependence, and how to preserve and manage them is vital for ensuring your safety, comfort, and well-being within your home.

Your home is a system

Modifying one element in your home affects the other components since it is a system.

Home Energy Professionals

When you plan to remodel or make changes that could affect your home’s systems, or if you want to get an energy assessment or evaluation, it’s advisable to consult a home energy professional. They can assist you in prioritizing and identifying cost-effective fixes that will have the most significant impact. You can find these professionals through your local utility company.

How Well Does Your Home Perform?

Don’t forget to consider all of your utility bills, including water, sewer, and trash, when assessing the performance of your home.

Cutting the waste and being efficient

By reducing waste and increasing efficiency in resource and energy use, you can save money and maximize the use of your resources.

Electricity

Being mindful of your electricity usage and other resources is important. If you use only what you need, you can ensure that there is enough to go around and avoid wasting valuable resources.
