Surviving Indoor Air Quality During Colder Months

Unless you’re in a warmer climates, the colder temperatures mean spending a lot more time indoors. Although our homes keep us sheltered from the elements, being cooped up for months on end can have an effect on not only mood, but also health. This brings up the topic of indoor air quality and ways to protect us from stale air and contaminates.

Protect Your Indoor Air Quality

In an earlier post, we talked about easy ways to improve the air quality in your home and results of living with poor air quality. Things like chemical use and air cleaning indoor plants, as mentioned, are still very effective. But during the colder months, with our limited exposure to fresh air, it may be necessary to take additional steps to keep the air we breathe clean.

Properly vacuuming and keeping up with dust can go a long way toward controlling the harmful contaminates you are exposed to. It is also important to make sure to give pets baths on a regular basis to minimize exposure to dander. Most people don’t realize how difficult it is to remove pet dander from upholstery and carpet.

Indoor Air Cleaning Systems  For Your Home

Air cleaning and purifying systems are relatively new technologies to help clean the air in our homes.  Systems range from HEPA rated air filters for your HVAC system (a fairly simple and lower cost option) to installation of ionizing and UVG lamp systems (more complicated and costly options).  While for many of us, a HEPA filter is adequate, ionizing and UVG lamp systems may be considerations for those with asthma and other breathing conditions which require higher levels of home air purification.
