I had the opportunity to visit the Proud Green Home St. Louis a few days ago. I always love seeing all the people come out to learn what makes these green, a.k.a. high performance homes different. In my estimation, green homes are simply better built homes. They take advantage of nature, building materials and quality construction practices. While oftentimes, it is the higher end homes that we see in the media, truly any home at any price point can take advantage of nature, building materials and quality construction practices. To me, one thing that definitely sets a high performance home apart is a great building envelope to keep the cold air out in winter and the hot, humid air out in the summer. Part of this envelope is insulation. Check out this quick video on how foundation (basement) insulation helps play its part.
If you are embarking on a building or remodeling project it can be easy to overlook the importance of exterior insulation, but the payoffs that come from this one detail are multi-fold to the home owners season after season creating superior added value to the project. Adding exterior insulation or the infamous pink rigid foam around the outside of the foundation walls or basement besides just being a great way to insulate it will also keep your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer thus lowering utility cost for the homeowner. It just really is a great addition to any house , so keep it in mind in your next building or remodeling project.
