Magic happened last week. Magic in connections, in sharing, in learning and in green homes. Last week was the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) annual convention and expo – the International Builders Show, more fondly known as IBS (and the good kind). More than 60,000 attendees participated, part of the more than 100,000 at the third annual Design & Construction Week, which included the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS), The International Surface Event and International Window Coverings Expo. And of course, we weren’t the only happening in the magic land of Las Vegas!
Green homes and green in homes were a big part of the magic – in meetings, in education sessions, in the bookstore and on the expo floor. Thousands of people toured The New American Home, an Emerald NGBS Green Certified home built to showcase what’s possible in a home today. Magic in a home!
For me, it started with talking with the NAHB Multifamily Council about green certifications and practices in multifamily buildings and units. It continued with the Sustainability and Green Building subcommittee and the launch of NGBS.com to find green homes – to buy, rent or remodel. Eight (8) experts in green home building delivered the “Future of High Performance Housing” education session to a full room. What an honor to be a part of this amazing line up! On to the Design Studio to meet up with colleagues over lunch and lead the conversation on “How to Get Women Asking for More Green.” Green Banter and Beer offered green home and certification tips and insights from a trio of NGBS Green Verifiers, including my marketing partner Phil LaRocque.
The Best in Green Awards showcased green homes and projects, and announced Karen Benner of EYA as the Young Professional of the Year. The St. Louis area was excited to have Nathan Verning of Oasis Homes as a finalist along with Karen and 3 others. The emcee of the awards, Marnie Oursler, a builder from Delaware and HGTV rising star also led Lessons in Leadership with the NAHB Professional Women in Builders at the show. Talk about connections!
Connections and recognition rocked on with the NAHB Professional Women in Building (PWB) Awards recognizing outstanding councils and women on their achievements in NAHB, their local associations and the home building industry. More connections at the PWB Installation and Spike Party and the place to be – thank you InSinkErator for all you do for PWB. (Did you know a disposer is a green home practice?)
There is more, much more magic – to learn, to share and to connect. Want to find out more about happenings at IBS or how to participate next year? Let’s talk.
