Honoring People and Organizations for Green
Does your community honor people and organizations practicing green and sustainable philosophies and practices? In my hometown of St. Louis, Missouri, our local US Green Building Council celebrates by honoring these exact people and organizations at the annual Growing Green Awards! This has been a wonderful way of growing our green and sustainability community and involving all types of organizations and people. This year’s nominees included a commercial equine facility, our zoo (still free – amazing!), several schools (university and K-12), local architects and more. Each of these people and organizations has made a great impact in our community by continually doing things better, greener, or smarter. And oftentimes all three!
Award Winners and Attendees – Commitment to Green
This year’s award winners include my green colleague Gary Steps of Butterfly Energy Works. I worked with Gary several years ago to help get Butterfly Energy Works rolling and it was very cool to see him honored for the work and education he has been so committed to for many years.
In the picture with Gary and me is “Green Jean” Ponzi – a lynchpin in the greening of St. Louis. Jean is the host of local radio show Earthworms and has been a friend and mentor for many years. She has helped dozens of companies “green up” their operations and daily activities through the St. Louis Green Business Challenge presented by the St. Louis Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Missouri Botanical Garden. But, more on that in another blog.
I hope you have people and organizations in your community that are honored for their commitments to green and sustainability. Every little bit counts!
